Trauma therapy is not one-size-fits-all. It must be adapted to address different symptoms. Our therapists who are specially trained in treating trauma can assess a survivor’s unique needs and plan treatment specifically for them.
Trauma informed evaluation
Trauma informed evaluations are completed by Masters Level Mental Health Professional, Licensed Mental Health Professionals and Trauma Informed Specialists. The focus of this evaluation looks to address an individual’s trauma history and offer possible recommendations.
Trauma treatment options:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy
EMDR therapy is specifically for those who experienced traumatic events that developed into psychological trauma, emotional trauma, childhood trauma, and PTSD. Through the use of rapid eye movement stimulation, EMDR therapy momentarily reopens these painful experiences but encourages proper healing of the situation. Through working with our trained EMDR therapist, EMDR therapy can help individuals reprocess the traumatic memories and allow the brain to heal properly. EMDR gives individuals the opportunity to see themselves as a survivor, rather than living as a victim of circumstance.

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) processing therapy is intended specifically for individuals who struggle with acute or chronic PTSD. It has the most evidence as an effective form of PTSD therapy through the use of talk therapy. By working with a therapist to change thoughts about the event individuals are able to change how they feel about the event. Cognitive processing therapy provides those in need of PTSD therapy with the tools to readjust their processing of the traumatic event, and gives individuals the opportunity to change their perspective on the trauma which led to PTSD in the first place. Through cognitive processing therapy, individuals can reevaluate the facts about the event and determine whether their resulting thought process is justified. TF-CBT takes place in a safe environment with a trained professional in order to achieve the best results.

Family Systems Therapy
Family systems therapy is based on the family systems theory from Murray Bowen. Bowen explained that individuals are closely linked through a network of relationships. This is especially true for victims of trauma and PTSD who need treatment for trauma. Having supportive relationships is imperative during recovery from emotional trauma, psychological trauma, childhood trauma, or PTSD. During family systems therapy, your family is brought in and a session is held, while the therapist determines the family dynamics. Using family systems therapy, your therapist will explore the ways that each member of the family treats the others and considers the impact on your development. Through multiple family systems therapy sessions as a family unit, you, your spouse/significant other, your parents, and/or your siblings will work together to repair maladapted interpersonal relations. Through family systems therapy, you can work with your family to mend broken relationships or adjust unhealthy ones. If you have little or no relationship with your family, your therapist may instead work through familial dynamics on an individual basis. Though results will not be as whole as they would if your entire family were there, they can help you adjust your thinking and understanding of your place in your family.

Sandplay Therapy
Therapists who are working with individuals who have experienced trauma often find that talk therapy is not effective as a treatment method. This may be due to the fact that the horrors of war cannot be expressed through words. Veterans need nonverbal ways to express their thoughts and emotions. The value of Sandplay therapy is that it provides space for silent work and clients have opportunity to express themselves without speaking. Sandplay therapy brings a depth of understanding and emotional freedom through expressing original sufferings and connecting with them. Step by step the trauma makes its way to symbolic expression that has been blocked verbally, through which it becomes visual and brings liberation and healing. The therapist’s important role is in keeping the therapeutic space in which the client feels so free and protected that it allows the traumatic experiences to surface and dares the client to experience horrors of war again.
